Ryan SmithDirector of Leadership Development
Ryan leads a team of 17 learning and talent management professionals responsible for designing and executing a talent development strategy to support Progressive’s 31,000+ employees. His teams’ primary areas of focus include competency-based learning, leadership development programs, assessments, mentoring, coaching and talent management strategy.
Prior to joining Progressive Insurance in 2014, Ryan spent 14 years working for four large companies in Northeast Ohio (FirstEnergy, J.M. Smucker, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, and Cleveland Clinic). He holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in finance and worked in a variety of corporate finance roles prior to moving into talent management in 2008. His favorite career assignments have been the development of an enterprise risk management function, the creation of a talent management department, and the start-up of a leadership development “center of expertise.”
Ryan enjoys spending time with his wife and three boys. In addition, he is an avid reader and loves to travel. Finally, he is actively engaged in several non-profits that support the economic and spiritual development of orphans in Africa.
